Summer is hell on style, especially if you live in New York City or other metropolitan areas where humidity takes precedent. Between the 90 degrees and humidity, running around the city in non-AC subways, it’s hard to find the motivation to look good knowing that you will sweat it out.

Think about it, how many times have you planned an amazing outfit in your head just to be disappointed to arrive to sweaty, 20 minutes after you put it on. That is the price we pay to live in the city that never sleeps. But of course it would be nice to not sweat out of our outfits and still look presentable throughout the day. And lucky for you it is possible. The below tips and tricks will help get you there.

Tip 1: Light colors

Light-colored clothing versus dark-colored clothing is a big rule of thumb for summer dressing. These lighter colors will work overtime to reflect the sun’s ultraviolet rays instead of absorb them like dark-colored clothing does. Argo, it keeps you cool and looking and feeling fresh.

Tip 2: Lightweight

And speaking of light, make sure your clothes are lightweight too. The goal is to have as much breathability and pockets of air as possible when you are parading the hot, sticky New York streets.

Tip 3: Athleisure

Also, don’t be afraid of sporting athleisure outside the gym. Performance clothes are all made with moisture-wicking properties to keep sweat off you. Which will save your wallet as well, since you can use these clothes for the gym and daily life. They have great breathability for extra air circulation and will keep you looking sharp all summer long.

As for fabrics, it’s best to look for cotton during this season. Unlike synthetic fabrics, cotton is extremely breathable and because of the tight weave, it will keep clothes from wrinkling. For your pants, this is the time to really lean into roomier and relaxed cuts where you can have some stretch in them and feel no constricted movement.

As for shoes, the days you can get by with flip flops or Birkenstocks, go right ahead. Comfy is the name of the game. Of course, you don’t want your feet suffocating in closed-toed shoes so when you need to be a bit more formal and dressy, might we suggest strapped sandals like Tevas or designer slides, or TOMS.

Follow these tips and others for one stylish, and non-sweaty summer.
