Like many skin care fiends, I switch over to body butter from body lotion every single winter. With the cold winter temperatures and increase of heating systems, I find that traditional body care products from the drugstore are too packed with harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances and parabens to properly hydrate my skin.

An alternative to these negative side affects, of course, are natural body butters that have plant-based ingredients, essential oils and hydrating properties that will nourish and protect your skin from all the winter aliments.

Natural body butters are thicker and richer than traditional body lotion and work wonders on dry or sensitive skin. The majority of them are loaded with shea, cocoa, and mango butter mixed with jojoba, grapeseed, and coconut oils to protect your skin. Below, we put together a list of soothing benefits that will delight your body this winter season and beyond.

1. Works well as a total-body moisturizer

Experts recommend using body butters directly after you shower when your skin is still a bit moist to better penetrate and work into the skin. You can apply the body butter with gentle massage strokes, just remember a little bit goes a long way. You don’t want the skin to feel greasy by taking too big of a handful on one area.

2. Use it on neckline and lips if you want

Take a small amount of body butter in your palms and gently rub it warm. Then, rub some on your neck and lips starting from your chest and stroke in an upwards manner.

3. Use it as a pre-cleanser

Sure, facial cleansers are used to clean off dirt, impurities, pollution, and any other environmental determinants, but a body butter used with a cotton swab can act as a pre-cursor to clean skin. By moistening a cotton swab, you can apply a small amount of body butter and watch it take all the dirt off your body.

4. No more dry hands

Body butter not only is great for your body, but acts as an incredible hand cream. Applying body butter to your hands daily in the winter will be your saving grace to cracked knuckles and dry palms. If your hands are in need of a deeper restoration, try applying a thick layer of body butter and sleeping with gloves on for a better, super-smooth end result.

5. Reduce scars and stretch marks

Yes, it’s amazing for your body’s hydration but because it has nutritious vitamins and fatty acids, it will revitalize the skin and improve complexion — allowing it to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scars, no matter how deep in the skin dermal they might be.

6. Soft feet awaits

While we continue to work from home and shelter in place, maybe you are opting for more barefoot days or months? Although the shoeless life is incredible, it can create havoc on your heels. Take a warm salty foot bath and after you pat your feet dry, rub on some body butter to soak in the benefits.
