Shaving soap, applied to the skin before a razor or electrical shaver, is the essential item to a clean, smooth shave.

Good shaving soap

A good shaving soap will protect the skin from abrasions and irritations, while keeping it properly hydrated. When you lather a shaving soap, you want to make sure the lather is stable so it can glide through the whole shave. Another thing to look out for is the ability of the soap to be slick and to reduce irritation. And lastly, hydration. Soaps can often dry out the skin so make sure you opt for one with good hydrating ingredients like coconut oil, potassium and sodium salts.

It should have high stearic acid to create that stable lather and thickness you should be after. The potassium hydroxide and sodium salts will create a soft soap and a good consistency. When mixed with the nourishing agents (vitamin E, jojoba oil, cocoa butter and more) these ingredients will create a much better shave than your average drugstore soap. If you used a regular bar of soap instead of shaving soap, you could risk the chance or cuts or irritations as there will be no protective barrier for the skin. And if you have sensitive skin, it could make skin even more irritated.

Cream or soap?

Now that you know the benefits of shaving soap, what is the difference between a soap and a cream? This is actually a very common question, and honestly it comes down to personal preference. Shaving creams are a bit easier in our opinion as it’s already lathered, while soaps need a bit of a brush or pressure to work them into a lather.
