Why you need Antioxidants in your Skincare routine

COVID has forced us all inside. The impact has not only affected our mental health, incomes, and social calendars but our skin too. If you notice your skin hasn’t been itself lately, now is probably a good time to redefine your skincare. To be honest, proper skin care should be a year round priority. That doesn’t mean casually splashing water on your face in the morning or in the shower. It means, creating a regimen designed to keep your skin healthy and vibrant 365 days a year. And to help you, we want to talk to you about antioxidants. 


What are antioxidants?

If you have facial hair, your skin might appear oily. The downside, oil often causes acne. To combat that and so many other skin issues (inflammation and wrinkles) we recommend antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that naturally occur to protect your cells from damage. The body produces a ton of it but not the required amount. You can get the rest from the foods you eat (leafy greens and veg) or topical creams you use. 


Ok. But what are the benefits?

Antioxidants reduce inflammation caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that are produced if you’re exposed to excess sun, stress, pollution, smoke and more. Once you add in antioxidants to your skin, you will notice it repairs all damages, like blotchiness, fine lines, wrinkles and acne. 

  • Brighter and even skin tone: free radicals work to decrease the skin’s natural melanin production, leading to uneven skin tone and dark spots. Antioxidants reduce skin pigmentation. 
  • Boost collagen production: creating more youthful looking skin.
  • Firm skin: skin will be lifted and toned after each use.
  • Improve scar appearance: antioxidants increase blood circulation to the scar area, making the scar tissue blend into normal tissue, reducing its appearance. 


What products should I get?

It’s a good rule of thumb to buy anything heavy in Vitamin C. It is one of the most widely used and studied skincare antioxidants. It will help stimulate collagen production and minimize dark spots.
