Apple’s long-awaited September release event took place on Wednesday, September 7, and introduced an all-new iPhone lineup, rebuilt AirPods Pro, 3 new Apple Watch models, and an exciting update to Apple Fitness+. Though Apple’s die-hard fans were mostly expecting new iPhones, the event provided a slew of new and exciting updates and products. Here’s what was announced.
Of course, the much awaited new iPhone 14 and 14 Plus were revealed, with the iPhone 14 offering a 6.1” screen, and the iPhone 14 Plus a 6.7” screen. Essentially nothing much has changed in the design. The new phone is bigger and does have an improved camera and comes with 5 additional colors: Blue, purple, red, midnight, and starlight.
The new model has a feature called the Photonic Engine, which promises to deliver better photos in low-light settings (as opposed to the ghostly effect low-light photos have recently had), it is also advertised to have the longest battery life ever.
The new iPhones also come with a feature that lets them connect to satellites when there’s an emergency and no cell service, as well the eradication of a SIM card tray, making it so that eSims have to be used. This may be an issue for those who travel internationally quite often but there sure is a way to avoid exorbitant roaming charges.
The iPhone 14 starts at $799 and the Plus model starts at $899. The main difference between the two is the size. These models also come in a Pro and Pro Max version. These versions got a few upgrades, including a new feature called the “dynamic island” — one of the most exciting updates in the announcement. Basically, the black oval front-facing camera cut-out is now the unlikely home for an animated series of new notifications that will pop up. It’s basically a moveable notch that displays key data.
The iPhone 14 Pro also comes with an upgraded camera that utilizes a much larger sensor that will take crisp photos even from a distance. Of course, the Pro features add to the cost of the new model. The Pro starts at $999 whereas the Pro Max starts at $1,099.
You can pre-order all the iPhone 14 models now via apple.com. The iPhone 14 will be available on 9/16 and the iPhone 14 Plus will be available on 9/17. All the iPhone 14 Pro models will be available on 9/16 as well.
iPhones were not the only exciting releases of the event, there were also new Apple Watches.
The Series 8 Watch
The Series 8 Watch was the star of the show. It has a temperature sensor, which happens to be a key feature for tracking ovulation and cycles. Of course, this comes with its own set of concerns given the post-Roe ruling. The Watch is also able to detect when a user is in a car crash and can alert emergency contacts and authorities. There are of course aesthetic upgrades to the watch, including collaborations with Hermes and Nike. Prices start at $399 for the Series 8.
Apple Watch SE
The cheaper version of the Watch, the SE, also came with its own upgrade. The GPS model starts at $249 and the cellular model at $299. The new watch is faster and larger than the previous model.
Apple Watch Ultra
The real stunner was that Apple announced a whole new and completely different Watch called the Apple Watch Ultra. This Watch is designed for hardcore athletes and people who are serious about the outdoors. Its battery life can go to up to 36 hours and there are different bands designed for different kinds of athletes (swimmers, divers, runners, etc.). This comes at a hefty price tag though, starting at $799.
AirPods Pro (2nd generation)
And lastly, there’s a new AirPods Pro model. Of course there’s a bunch of updates in the second generation AirPods including personalized spatial audio, up to 30 hours of listening time, and touch controls. The 2nd generation AirPods Pro are available for pre-order from apple.com now for $249, they will release on 9/23.
