Season 5 of Netflix’s Black Mirror was released almost 3 years ago, and fans of the dystopic and eerily realistic drama series have been waiting since then for the new series. According to some sources, Season 6 is currently in the works, with casting now being underway. While most of the details are being kept under wraps, it seems that the new season will boast more episodes than the last season (I mean, after this long wait, it better).
But apparently, the new season is worth the wait. It seems that its production is more cinematic, with each episode is being treated as its own film. This is reminiscent of a new trend on streaming platforms where episodes feel more thought out and more movie-like (think Westworld and Game of Thrones). But this is also on brand for Black Mirror, where episodes in recent seasons have hovered around the 60-minute mark and have had big production values.
The new season of Black Mirror will be the first to air since the show’s creator, Charlie Brooker, and his co-creative partner, Annabel Jones, parted ways with their production company House of Tomorrow in January 2020. Shortly after, the duo launched a new production label, Broke and Bones, and Netflix swiftly made an investment in the firm that allows it to acquire parts of the company over the next 5 years, which could provide up to $100 million USD.
Brooker and Jones were unable to produce more seasons of the series because of the rights being acquired by another company. However, they did work on a mockumentary about 2020, Death to 2021, which came out in 2021.
The real dilemma is how to create a show about societies falling apart, when this is happening in real time. Will the creators be able to be sensitive towards the current state of the world? Will they be hopeful? In a show based on dystopian thinking, we do wonder if the creators will try to put a positive spin to it.
In an interview from May 2020, Brooker shared: “At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those. I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”
Though there hasn’t been an official announcement about this release, it seems that we can expect a new season of Black Mirror sometime in the near future.
