COVID-19 is still delaying movie production

What’s another year, right?

Although movies are slowly but surely making their way back to theaters, (which may close again soon, thanks Omicron), the looming threat of COVID-19 still sits heavy on film production and post-production schedules, significantly pushing back release dates. Many movies released this year were meant to release at the tail end of 2020 and a few films even saw some last minute second-round release date delays in 2021.

While movies are either being delayed or catching up from prior delays, there is one silver lining amidst the frustration — IMAX showings are thriving. IMAX revenues soared over 50% in Q3 with films such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsBlack Widow and Free Guy to thank, making it the best quarter IMAX has seen since the start of the pandemic. The company reported $142 million in earnings for Q3, and Variety notes it’s outperforming traditional movies theaters in ticket sales. Additionally, in October (part of Q4), IMAX set a new record for the month with $100 million globally.

Below are movies that have been delayed.

For many movie-goers, this has been frustrating. A lot of the films set to release are installments of popular franchises and COVID-19 delays are not only creating impatience but also creating a culture of releasing leaks on social media, which kills the movie-going experience all together.

In other news, the upcoming The Matrix Resurrections film isn’t supposed to be a sequel to the original trilogy and some Spider-Man variants you might not know about.
