With talks of Deadpool potentially making an appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans have been waiting nearly 4 years for the third installment of the Deadpool film series. After months without an update, we finally have some exciting news.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shawn Levy has been brought onto the project as the threequel’s director. Levy has had a pretty solid year in terms of blockbuster releases with Free Guy and Netflix’s most recent film The Adam Project — both films starring Ryan Reynolds. Our favorite fourth wall breaker took to Twitter to confirm Levy’s involvement saying that his next film with the director will be “a tad more stabby”.

The Deadpool films are the top-grossing X-Men films of all-time, with the original earning $783.1 million, and the sequel bringing in $785.8 million at the worldwide box office.
There’s no word yet if Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Brianna Hildebrand, T.J. Miller, or Karan Soni will be reprising their roles in the next film. However, Bob’s Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin have been commissioned to work on the script alongside Reynolds (who has heavily contributed creatively to the prior Deadpool films).
Deadpool will serve as the first X-Men-related character (as far as we know) to enter the MCU following the 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox. Marvel fans were worried that Disney’s acquisition would affect the R-rating that is typically attached to Deadpool projects. Despite many doubts and fears, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed with Collider that the threequel will still maintain its R-rating.
“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now…It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”
A release date for Deadpool 3 has not yet been announced.
What we do know are the dates for Comic Con 2022, so maybe more news will be announced then?
