One of 2020’s biggest dilemmas (and perhaps first world problem) was how to get your iPhone to identify your face via the Face ID feature when you’re wearing a mask. And of course, Apple hopped on the problem and maneuvered a solution: iPhone’s Face ID will soon work with a mask, but there’s a catch.
Face recognition while wearing a mask is still tricky for computers to figure out. Now that we’ve all settled into our face-masked reality and future, something had to be done. Apple unveiled that they have started testing new software for the iPhone, allowing users to unlock their handset while wearing a face mask. The catch? This new face unlock feature requires an Apple Watch.
So, if you don’t have an Apple Watch, you may not be able to use face recognition to unlock your phone while wearing a face covering yet. The company is working on developing this feature, but it seems that it may take a little bit longer. Maybe by then we all won’t be needing masks anymore? Here’s to wishful thinking!
