“Yes, there is a Jon Snow show in development,” Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin wrote on his blog after the news came out. “Our working title for the show is SNOW.”
—SPOILER ALERT (HOW HAVE YOU NOT SEEN THE ENDING YET?!)—
Yes, you read that correctly. The HBO series whose popularity spread like a wildfire now has a spin-off in development. Kit Harrington is set to return as the fan-favorite character Jon Snow and outline the events after the original series. The series’ final season left us with a huge reveal — Jon Snow’s real name was Aegon Targaryen, a potential heir to the Iron Throne. Exiled from Westeros, Snow trekked north of the Wall and left his old life behind him.
George R.R. Martin has mentioned that Kit Harrington was the one who brought up the idea for the spin-off. “Yes, it was Kit Harrington [sic] who brought the idea to us. I cannot tell you the names of the writers/showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet…but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.” Martin also noted, “SNOW has been in development almost as long as the other three, but for whatever reason it was never announced and it never leaked…until now.”
HBO’s handling of the Game of Thrones franchise is similar to that of Disney (in how they’ve handled Marvel and Star Wars with character-based spin-off series). This Jon Snow series marks the seventh Game of Thrones-related project currently in development along with the upcoming House of Dragon prequel series, which tells the story of a civil war that took place (200 years prior to the events in the original series) within House Targaryen.
Other spin-off projects include 10,000 Ships, 9 Voyages (AKA Sea Snake), Dunk and Egg, The Golden Empire, and a stage play about the tourney at Harrenhal.
Having multiple spin-off series in the works at once could open doors for many different characters to appear. Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams (who played Arya Stark) couldn’t be happier that HBO has decided to explore more of Jon Snow’s story. When speaking with PEOPLE at the Cannes Lions Festival, Williams said, “Everything surrounding the story [of GOT] is very exciting. We had such a rich show, and there’s still so much story to tell. I think it’s really exciting, and I think that Kit is such a phenomenal actor. Him playing Jon Snow was just like a cultural reset, I think everything that he touches is magic, and I’m excited to see what it’s going to be.”
