The trailer for the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts has been released. It opens with someone reading a special edition of The Daily Prophet with the headline “Hogwarts welcomes back alumni” — teases some of the actors starring in the special, including Robbie Coltrane, Matthew Lewis and Mark Williams.
Coltrane and Lewis are seen receiving their very own Hogwarts invitation letters, along with shots of other cast members strolling alongside the iconic Hogwarts Express at Platform 9 ¾.
This special HBO Max event is in celebration of the 20 years that have passed since the premiere of the first Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The show is set to feature numerous interviews and never-before-seen clips from the Harry Potter franchise and conversations with the cast.
The franchise’s main trio, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson are set to return for this celebratory event. Other notable cast members featuring in the reunion include Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Isaacs, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Alfred Enoch, Evanna Lynch and Bonnie Wright.
Absent from the appearance roster is the series’ author, J.K. Rowling. While the reason is unknown, many suspect she has been excluded from the 20th anniversary event due to the backlash that came after Rowling’s comments in regards to the trans community. Stars such as Radcliffe and Watson have since distanced themselves from Rowling, criticizing her transphobic comments. It’s unclear if her attendance is being kept under wraps, but as far as we know, she will only be appearing in archive footage during the HBO Max event.
Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts premieres on HBO Max on Jan. 1, 2022.
