Rolf and Mette Hay were asked by Herman Miller to reimagine the iconic mid-century Eames pieces as a tribute to HAY‘s 20th anniversary this year. A handful of timeless Eames designs were updated by the Danish design house and transformed into modern, vibrant versions, with new colors and modern materials.
The collection, which includes fresh and new color schemes and modernized materials, is a potent fusion of unique, enduring style with a contemporary twist. For HAY creators Rolf and Mette Hay, who have always admired modern design, Herman Miller, and the designers Charles and Ray Eames, this is a perfect time for them to venture into this collaboration.
Herman Miller’s website states: “Eames Office thrived on collaborations with clients and creative partners like textile master Alexander Girard. In this spirit, Rolf and Mette Hay pay homage to both Herman Miller design greats by using a reissued Jacob’s Coat textile designed by Girard as a new look for the Eames Sofa Compact.”
Eight pieces make up the HAY x Herman Miller collection, each of which keep the classic Herman Miller and Eames style while adding a playful modern touch. Being quite familiar with the current color palette of the furniture, the intention was to focus on thinking forward to the future, rather than backward to the past.
The “Eames Molded Plastic Chair” both with and without arms, the “Wire Chair,” the “Universal Base Round Table,” the “Wire Base Low Table,” and the “Hang It All” coat rack are all part of the series. Toffee, indigo, iron red, mint green, powder yellow, and powder pink are just a few of the captivating hues used to produce the collection. Additionally, only post-industrial recycled plastic was used to create the Eames Molded Plastic Chair. Some of the pieces also had cast-glass components.
HAY looked into the Herman Miller archives to get inspiration and references, especially when it came to the colorway of the furniture. They wanted to modernize the company’s approach to using color without directly mimicking it.
The foundation of Herman Miller and its legacy is based on creative risk-taking and collaboration with other creatives in the field and industry. The HAY x Herman Miller collection brings together the iconic design language of Eames with new colors and a refreshing futuristic twist, making the already beloved brand even more appealing to a wider audience.
The collection was released on September 21, 2022 across North America, South America, Asia, Australia, and Africa. The collection will also be sold exclusively through the MoMA Design Store in the United States and Inform Interiors in Canada. You can also buy it directly from Herman Miller’s shop.
