With numerous other spinoffs in development, HBO has a lot riding on this show, but it also has a huge fanbase that was let down by the end of Game of Thrones in 2019. The GoT-verse may be cut down before it blooms if this prequel fails to deliver. Alternatively, if it is successful, viewers might be happy to go back to Westeros once a week for the foreseeable future.
Now that the premier is weeks away, refresh yourself and your expectations with the show’s trailer.
House of the Dragon will tell the story of the Targaryen war of succession that took place 150–200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The main characters include King Viserys I, Crown Princess Rhaenyra, Prince Daemon, and Alicent Hightower, who is Rhaenyra’s best friend and the daughter of the King’s Hand.
Here are 3 themes that we can expect from the show.
1. Going back and forth in time
The storytelling of House of the Dragon will look a little bit different from the original series. While the series begins with Rhaenyra and Alicent as youngsters, midway through, we jump forward 10 years. It’s claimed that there are multiyear time jumps within the 10-episode season.
This is an odd twist seeing as the author attempted to insert a 5-year time jump between the books but then abandoned the idea completely in A Song of Ice and Fire.
2. Gender and power relations
A big theme in the show is the patriarchy’s effect on powerful women in Westeros. For example, a slew of major powerful female characters were in the original series, such as Cersei, Daenerys, and Sansa.
Putting a spotlight on gender imbalance is actually a conscious and organic decision, given the history of Westeros. Those who are familiar with the books know that in Fire and Blood, Rhaenyra was pitted against a male contender for the throne.
3. Comparisons to the original show
It is undeniable that House of the Dragon will be compared to the original Game of Thrones. Given that we are talking about the same fictional universe with some of the same families and locations, it is impossible to avoid comparisons. A line from the trailer when Rhaenyra proclaims: “When I am queen, I will create a new order,” mirrors that of Daenerys’ proclamation.
House of the Dragon is set to premiere on Sunday, August 21.
