How to Detox your armpits if you want to try Natural Deodorant

It’s too hot to be out here experimenting.

If you are still using deodorants with aluminum, I need you to listen up real quick. We should have left those behind a long time ago, but here’s your chance to leave it in the dust for good.

No, it’s not because of the common (unproven) belief that antiperspirants can cause breast cancer. It’s because it’s natural to sweat and you’re actually making yourself smell worse when you continually use antiperspirants. A lot of us started off using deodorants that had aluminum in them. At the time, it was a rite of passage to apply your swipe of deodorant to your newly adolescent armpits, go about your day smelling like artificial fragrances, and come back home dry as a desert.

When natural deodorants came onto the scene, a lot of people hated them. People were getting rashes in their armpits, their body odor worsened tenfold, and the new feeling of sweat collecting in their armpits was not a pleasant one. Shopping for a reliable natural deodorant was yet another game of trial and error – a costly one at that. Among the variety of issues people were having with natural deodorant, the worsened body odor stood above the rest. The idea of having to carry the stick of deodorant with you to reapply just so you didn’t smell like a wet dog covered in dirt was not a convincing or attractive one.

So how do you avoid all that? What a lot of people didn’t know at the time was that you had to prep your armpits for natural deodorant. What the preparation called for was the detoxing of all the aluminum from your armpits. Detoxing takes roughly 2-4 weeks and requires you to stop wearing deodorant for the entirety of the detox period. Yes, you will smell and it’s not going to be easy. What usually causes the smell is the odor-causing bacteria mingling with your sweat.

Many people opt for the quick and easy armpit clay mask method, but that can get messy if you have hair in your armpits. Personally, I think the best and mess-free way to combat this is with an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) toner. There are a lot of AHA products out there so I’ll save you some time – I’d say go for The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution ($8.70). Not only is this one of the most popular AHA products on the market right now, but it’s also a great addition to your skincare routine!

Anyway, back to armpits. AHA exfoliates the surface of the skin and can kill the odor-causing bacteria in your armpits. I recommend doing this 2-3 days a week for the entire period of your detox. It will help with the smell and accelerate the process. After the 2-4 weeks period, you’ll find that your natural deodorant’s scent will not only last longer, but your body odor will be nearly non-existent and you’ll experience virtually zero irritation from your new deodorant.
