All die-hard IKEA fans, rejoice! After an initial launch in China last year, the much-anticipated air purifier FÖRNUFTIG from the Swedish furniture company has finally arrived in stores and online. The new product, which comes in black or white, is not only stylish and elegant, but also affordable — costing $54.99, which is a bargain compared to other air purifiers currently on the market. The ethos behind this release is clear and simple, much like the company itself: clean air should be affordable and accessible to all.

Henrik Telander, the product owner at IKEA, shared:

“At IKEA, we believe clean indoor air shouldn’t be a luxury for the few, and that’s why one of our main priorities in developing FÖRNUFTIG was to achieve a low price for both the air purifier and the filters. Today, air purifiers aren’t a viable option for most people, in particular not for those living in small spaces. With this in mind we optimized the air purifier for about 108 square feet, using less material in a smarter way, which enabled us to lower the price.”

Filters on the FÖRNUFTIG eliminate large particles like hair and dust, as well as smaller airborne particles like pollen and gaseous contaminants and odors from cooking or smoking. It’s also easy to use, simply adjust the fan speed dial to your preference. There are also replacement filters available for purchase. The filter for particle removal costs $5.49, while the gas cleaning filter costs $9.99.

Making the case for air purifiers, the sustainability development leader at IKEA of Sweden, Alexandra Audrey Galef explained:

“There is a general misconception that air pollution mainly happens outdoors, and that our home is a safe haven. IKEA conducted a Clean Air Survey in 2018 and found that people around the world underestimate air pollution in their homes. The Clean Air at Home guide by IKEA shares many simple actions that people can take to improve indoor air quality.”
