James Gunn planning ‘Suicide Squad’ spin-off series for HBO Max

Will Peacemaker get a chance to Bloodsport again?

If there’s any hope for the DCEU, I believe the bulk of the responsibility is on the shoulders of James Gunn. He has proven to bring a much needed jauntiness to superhero franchises and his recently released HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker showed all directors who are interested in entering the genre how to successfully crush the television format. Now that Gunn has made his name known in the genre, his eyes are set on creating a spin-off for the rest of the Suicide Squad.

On the Deadline podcast Hero Nation, Gunn said, “We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe. I can’t quite say.” When asked if fans can expect another season of Peacemaker, he replied, “There’s a really good chance of that. The show is doing extraordinarily well, and we’re excited, we all like doing it, we just need to cross some Ts and dot some Is, which is basically me.”

According to Variety, Viola Davis is in talks to reprise her role as Amanda Waller and will mostly likely build off of the season 1 ending of Peacemaker. It’s unclear whether or not booked and busy actors like Margot Robbie and Idris Elba will be available to accommodate the schedule requirements for a television series, but it’s likely we will see characters like Peacemaker (John Cena) and Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchoir) return, along with their less busy colleagues.

Hero Nation inquired about Doctor Who alum Peter Capaldi (who played Thinker, the Suicide Squad villain/hostage) and whether or not he will be returning for a potential spin-off series. Gunn laughed and replied, “I can’t say anything. It is connected to this universe, and I don’t think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker, it won’t be as much a  comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe.”

If there is a Suicide Squad spin-off in the works, it probably won’t happen anytime in the near future. Gunn has had his plate full back-to-back for a few years now. Since wrapping up Peacemaker, he’s been ardently tending to Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
