A new iteration of Harley Quinn might be upon us and she could be making her debut in the Joker sequel. House of Gucci actor and accomplished music artist, Lady Gaga, is in early talks to join Todd Phillips’ sequel to the 2019 Oscar-winning film Joker, alongside Joaquin Phoenix.
Director Todd Phillips and his co-writer Scott Silver have just finished the script for the sequel, titled Joker: Folie à deux — a reference to a medical term that outlines an identical or similar mental disorder that affects two or more individuals — and have begun the process of showing it to the studio to get the pre-production ball rolling.
There’s no confirmation in regards to Gaga’s involvement with the project but based on the title, it looks like Phillips plans on bringing Joker’s well-known (and heavily abused) love interest/partner in crime into the fold.
If you thought Lady Gaga potentially joining on as Harley Quinn was big news, get this. The sequel is going to be a musical. The first film has become immortalized by 2 scenes.
One being Phoenix’s dance on the “Joker Stairs” (the step street connecting Shakespeare and Anderson avenues at West 167th Street in Highbridge in the Bronx) and the other being the bathroom dance to one of composer Hildur Guðnadóttir’s scores.
When speaking with The Guardian, Guðnadóttir expressed how impressed she was by Phoenix’s movements and how perfectly they fell in sync with her music writing process. “It was completely unreal to see the physical embodiment of that music. His hand gestures were the same types of movements that I felt when I wrote the music. It was one of the strongest collaborative moments I’ve ever experienced.”
As we all know, Gaga is highly accomplished in the music space with her numerous awards and nominations, making her the perfect candidate for this project. This wouldn’t be her first rodeo with director Todd Phillips. She starred in Phillips’ 2018 musical film A Star Is Born with co-star and producer Bradley Cooper. Phillips and Cooper are both producers on Joker, only strengthening the likelihood of Gaga’s participation in Joker: Folie à deux. With her experience in A Star Is Born, and more recently, her phenomenal performance as Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci, Gaga has proved herself to not only be a powerhouse music artist, but also as a talented actor.
The sequel is rumored to start filming early next year. Remember when there were rumors that Barry Keoghan was going to be the next Joker? Ha.
