By now you are probably blissfully aware of the amount of skincare ingredients there are — chia seed oil, rosehip oil, hyaluronic acid, mastic oil, jojoba oil, and so much more. And if you’re overwhelmed by the sheer amount of ingredients, allow us to add one more to your plate: Kakadu plum.

Derived from the Australian fruit, this hero ingredient has been used by indigenous people for healing for centuries. It has a nutritious spike to modern-day recipes but can also be great in skin care for its cellular turnover benefits. To learn more about the buzzy new skincare ingredient, continue reading below.

Benefits of Kakadu plum

Kakadu plum is filled with Vitamin C, one of the greatest tools to reduce signs of premature aging as it helps stimulate collagen growth. Collagen is the protein that increase skin firmness (also known as elastin) and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Not only that though, it will help plump the skin and reduce dark circles — creating a natural and youthful glow.

Some other benefits of Kakadu plum are its ability to provide antioxidant protection against toxins. As the primary function of the skin’s outer barrier is to hold moisture, it works well with Vitamin C to keep out toxins as well. Basically, Kakadu plum has gallic acid in it which works to protect against free radical damage that is a direct result of over exposure to pollution, dust, debris, and sun. Free radicals attack cells and suck out all the moisture, resulting in inflammation and accelerated premature aging.

Inside of Kakadu plums are ellagic acid, an acid that enhances the amount of antioxidants naturally found in the body to strengthen skin and act as arm against intruders — improving total cellular health. You might think those are the only benefits but there are so much more.

What else can it do?

Kakadu plum will also help to reduce oxidative stress while defending against free radical damage from sun pollution. Instead of reaching for aloe vera to soothe a burn, reach for Kakadu plum. Packed with Vitamin C it will help brighten the skin and over time develop a resistance to the sun. Now that doesn’t mean you can skip sunscreen, but it does mean that Kakadu plum will help protect from the harsh effects of the sun.

Kakadu plum is also an antibacterial and an anti-inflammatory. It can help skin heal from overexposure to sun or any other sensitivities. It works to calm the skin while still strengthening the outer barrier and really helps calm down acne-prone skin. It helps in wound healing which will help minimize any scaring on the face from acne or discoloration — your skin will remain bright, smooth, and even.

If you suffer from acne-prone skin, also give safflower oil a try.
