Brooklyn-based artist KAWS is kicking off 2022 with a very hyped collaborative collection with The North Face. First teased and released in early January, the collection dropped in China and Taiwan in tandem with the artist’s KAWS: HOLIDAY project at Changbai Mountain in Baishan City, Jilin Province, China.

While the project was only on view from January 6-16 at the Changbaishan Luneng Resort, this winter assortment of gear will have any fan looking fresh on the slopes and streets for years to come.

The collection

The North Face’s motto of “Never Stop Exploring” has now entered the art world with KAWS providing his classic “XX” motif and signature bold lines and patterns. On their website, TNF states that “Our collaboration with KAWS blurs the lines of performance and possibility to reveal new levels of artistry.”

In order to achieve this blending of worlds, a plethora of bright colors have been chosen from KAWS’ palette and mixed with an assortment of TNF’s “ICONS”. Two ICONS, the Mountain Light jacket and Nuptse jacket, are both featured heavily in this collection along with a wide range of pants and accessories. Puffer pants are a must on the slopes and the accessories range includes items like the TNF Basecamp Duffle, gloves, balaclava, beanie and even dungarees.

All these items are staples in The North Face’s range but have been given drastic color adjustments and bold print pattern overlays by KAWS, resulting in not only fashionable slope style but also the street vibes and aesthetics that we’re used to from classic TNF products. The “XX” on the right shoulder of all the tops and right leg of the pants let’s you get seen anywhere.

The best part of this collection is that there will be adult and kids pieces.

KAWS’ 2021

KAWS had an amazing 2021 and is off to a fast start in 2022. The artist made our top 5 art moments of 2021 with his KAWS: HOLIDAY Singapore exhibit to end the year. Earlier in 2021, he dropped a 4-sneaker collaboration alongside sacai and Nike on the Blazer Low, collaborated with Supreme on a Box Logo tee and set off in a KAWS: HOLIDAY hot air balloon.

How to cop

Now onto the most important questions: How do I cop? Starting on February 17, The North Face website and retailers will begin selling the entire collection. According to The North Face’s website, members of their XPLR Pass will receive first access to the collection. Prices for each individual piece have yet to be announced but you can check StockX to get an idea of what the aftermarket is currently looking like and how much to set aside.

It’s still extremely early in the year but this collection could be one of the best of 2022 and in our minds again come next winter.

This collaboration is eye raising for fans of art and TNF because they refused to apologize to FUTURA2000 last year when he sued them for using his iconic design as their FUTURELIGHT logo. And as many know, KAWS and FUTURA2000 are good friends and spearhead the art world not only in NYC but across the globe.
