At long last, we finally have a trailer for Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi’s project with Netflix. We first heard rumblings of the animated series Entergalactic during the summer, when we got a look at the cast list and some artwork.
Right off the bat, you can tell that this series—even if going just by looks—will be different. The animation is a different style than what we’re used to. Not quite 2D, not quite stop motion. Colors come through in a vibrant pattern when the bold, polygon-esque lines of the characters are against them.
Cudi himself voices Jabari, a young artist who is out on his own after a breakup. He moves into a new place and meets Meadow (Jessica Williams), his new neighbor. From there, a tale of life and romance unfolds under the backdrop of NYC, along with a few otherworldly trips on Jabari’s bike.
No kidding. Jabari’s bike, from the trailer, seems to take on some sort of Rainbow Road effect, transporting himself and Meadow from place to place via space and stars. Whether it’s real or a device used to show the love story is yet to be told, but its intertwining presence makes the landscapes of the show even more enticing.
It’s obvious that Jabari and Meadow are nervous about falling in love, and the highs and lows and unexpected nature that comes with it. We hear soundbites from their friends like “Meeting someone in the city is a big deal. Let it be a good big deal,” and “Love is the easiest thing in the world when it happens by accident. But it doesn’t get real until you do it on purpose.”
And, of course, slight judgement from Jabari’s friends about taking a beautiful woman home on the pegs of his bicycle. But a ride is a ride.
What I love the most, aside from the experimental splashes of color used to bring out the hues of New York, is that the characters take after their voice actors aesthetically. Most of them, anyway. Jessica Williams looks so much like her counterpart, as does Laura Harrier, who voices Jabari’s ex-situationship, Carmen. Vanessa Hudgens draws a slight resemblance to Karina, as does Ty Dolla $ign, who plays Ky. But… Timothee Chalamet voices Jimmy, a Black guy and one of Jabari’s confidants.
I was trying to figure out who else I could spot in the cast, such as Jabari’s friend with the long blonde hair (my guess: Macaulay Culkin), and another friend, (Teyana Taylor, perhaps). But aside from that, Entergalactic premieres September 30th on Netflix. Don’t leave without catching the trailer and all its great music. This is going to be a good one.
And at some point, we’ll have more news about Frank Ocean’s collab with A24…any day now.
