Near the end of the month, Hulu will release a documentary about the explosive rise and tragic death of SoundCloud rapper XXXTENTACION. If his name is ringing a bell, that’s because it should. As we see in the trailer, he’s the most streamed SoundCloud rapper of all-time (wow) and has garnered over 1.3 billion YouTube hits. At the same time of his massive fame, however, he was the subject of much controversy due to his violent behavior.
Look at Me: XXXTENTACION will explore the exponential, overnight success that made teenager Jaheh Onfroy one of the most prolific SoundCloud rappers.
A press release states, “Director Sabaah Folyan offers a sensitive portrayal of an artist whose acts of violence, raw musical talent and open struggles with mental health left an indelible mark on his generation before his death at the age of 20.”
These factors left a mark indeed. Onfroy spoke candidly about his past arrests, which includes armed robbery and resisting arrest. His fans saw his openness as an appealing sign of keeping it 100.
At the time of his death, Onfroy was awaiting trial for a 2016 domestic abuse charge for beating his ex-girlfriend so badly, “the victim could not see.” While he pled not guilty, a secret recording later revealed him admitting to not only domestic violence, but a violent history. Onfroy had so many allegations at one point that Spotify removed his music from their flagship rap playlist for a time.
Look at Me will also explore Onfroy’s mental health struggles. For example, a colleague mentions he was at battle with himself in the trailer. We are also shown Onfroy’s mother talking about her son’s insomnia. “My son would not sleep at night. He would tell me he hears voices. They told me he was bipolar,” she says.
Other interviewees include XXXTENTACION’s ex-girlfriend, as well as fellow rappers Joey Bada$$, Trippie Redd, and Ski Mask the Slump God. Additionally, footage from the rapper and the late Juice WRLD are included. The two are considered pioneers and pillars of SoundCloud rap.
Look at Me: XXXTENTACION starts streaming on Hulu next week on May 26th.
