The recently released trailer for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom gave me chills watching as the late, and great, Chadwick Boseman delivers his lines. Heading to a Netflix screen near you, Boseman’s last film based on a play will release December 18. Below is all you need to know about the upcoming film.

Placed in 1920’s Chicago

Based on the play by August Wilson, the story explores racial tensions while following the career of Ma Rainey, also known as “Mother of the Blues,” also known as Viola Davis. The New York Times described Ma Rainey as, “the first entertainer to successfully bridge the divide between vaudeville — the cabaret-style shows that developed out of minstrelsy in the mid-1800s, and catered largely to white audiences — and authentic Black Southern folk expression.” From the trailer you can see the divide between Ma Rainey and her white management team and the hope in her trumpet player’s eyes, played by Boseman.

Denzel Washington is the producer

Truly, knowing this information is enough for me. Denzel Washington is in my top five favorite actors of all-time. He has been in iconic movies and won many awards so knowing this film was in his hands, makes me very excited. Both Denzel Washington and Viola Davis have spoken highly of Chadwick Boseman, both on and off the screen. The upcoming film will be a great tribute to both Ma Rainey and Boseman.
