Growing up, I’ve always loved Halloween specials (because I unasbashedly love Halloween). The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror is still very much first on my spooky season to-do list, along with planning out horror movies to watch for the entirety of October. While the spookiest month of the year tends to be my busiest, it looks like I’ll need to make a little more room for the upcoming Marvel Studios Halloween Special.
Michael Giacchino will direct the Marvel Studios special, and will be taking on the comic book series Werewolf by Night. You might remember him by his prolific resume. He served as the composer for The Batman, Spider-Man: Homecoming (and its two sequels), Rogue One, and multiple Pixar films (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up, and Coco— to name just a few). He also composed upcoming films such as Jurassic World 3: Dominion, Lightyear, and Thor: Love and Thunder. Outrageously impressive — and that’s still an understatement.
The Halloween special is said to be “werewolf-focused,” starring Gael Garcia Bernal (Coco, Y tu mamá también) and Laura Donnelly (The Nevers, Tolkien). Bernal is rumored to be portraying a werewolf, possibly the main character, known as Werewolf by Night. Donnelly is rumored to be playing Nina Price/Vampire by Night. Both character rumors have been unconfirmed and Donnelly’s character rumor is contingent on Bernal’s character confirmation.
Werewolf by Night is a title that has been held by two separate characters appearing in the Marvel comics of the same name. The first, Jack Russell, debuted in a 1972 issue of Marvel Spotlight. The series ran for a total of 43 issues and one of those featured the first appearance of Moon Knight, who is headlining his own Disney+ show with Oscar Isaac in the titular role.
The second version, Jake Gomez, is a Native American with a cursed family who showed up in the third volume of Werewolf by Night. Gomez’s recent presence in the Marvel comic book series means there’s a good chance that he will be the Werewolf by Night that we’ll see in the Halloween special — although it’s unconfirmed whether the main character will be Jack Russell or Jake Gomez.
In related holiday news, the Guardians of the Galaxy will get a Holiday Special too.
