For the first time, rapper Megan Thee Stallion speaks about the night she was shot by rapper Tory Lanez, in an interview with Gayle King. King describes the interview as “very raw, very intense, and very candid.”
King says that when something like this happens—with video, medical reports, and being reprimanded online—it all got to her, but she wanted to give her own narrative. She states that the situation is still extremely painful for her.

“In May 2020, Megan Thee Stallion’s hit song, “Savage,” was inescapable. So is she…which brings us to July 12th, 2020,” King says.
Megan’s account of the shooting
After a party at Kylie Jenner’s, Megan wanted to leave. Nobody else in her group (Tory, ex-friend Kelsey) was, even as they made it to the car with Tory’s security guard. An argument started with the two people in the back seat. Megan recollects “I just don’t want to be in this car.” She got out, and says she should’ve stayed out of the car, but the others convinced her to get back in. However, the argument got worse.
What happened next, Megan explains, was fast. She got out again and heard screaming. Tory was standing over the car window. He commanded her to dance and started shooting, making Megan terrified. She didn’t move in fear of being injured or killed.
Megan didn’t understand what was happening because of the adrenaline pumping through her veins. That’s when she looked down and noticed she was really bleeding—she’d been shot. She dropped to the ground in disbelief.
In Megan’s words, “He was apologizing, he’s—’I’m so sorry, please don’t tell nobody, I’ll give y’all a million dollars if y’all don’t say nothing.’ And I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?!” She continues, “What—are you offering me money right now? Like, help me! Like, if you’re sorry, just help me!”
By that time, the police had already been called. In her recollection, there were so many police cars, including helicopters, and she thought someone was going to die. George Floyd’s death had just happened—”The police are very much, ‘Shoot first, ask questions after.'”
The police told everybody to get out of the car, and then we saw footage from that night. Megan limped away from the car, leaving bloody footprints on the street. Because she was in fear of someone getting killed, she told the police she stepped on glass.
Megan kept up with the story until she was in the hospital, where the doctor asked her if she knew she had bullets in both feet—with the police in the room. “You got fragments in this foot, and it’s like, right on the back of your Achilles.” To this day, there’s still bullet fragments in her feet, according to the medical reports. The report states: “Successful removal of major bullet fragments. There were tiny fragments of retained missiles that were noted, however deemed too small to attempt retrieval.”
In texts obtained by CBS, Kelsey texted Megan’s bodyguard “Help,” and “Tory shot Meg.” Gayle reminds Megan that many people don’t believe she was shot because of the glass story, to which she responded—”There’s a hot gun in the car, what else—what happened?” She says she lied to protect everyone. “Sometimes, I really wish I never would’ve said that.”
Gayle asks Megan what kind of relationship she and Tory had. “He has led people to believe that it was a sexual relationship—that you two were dating.”
“We were not dating, we were really close. We were friends, we hung out like, every day. And his mom passed, too. So, I felt like we were bonding over that.” She believes he is trying to deflect from committing a crime. Lanez’s attorney, Shawn Holley, stated, “We look forward to addressing Ms. Pete’s claims—including all its inconsistencies, discrepancies and omissions—in a court of law.”
As a result of the incident, Megan states that her anxiety is worse, she’s colder to people because they’re hard to trust. She doesn’t want to hold long conversations with new people because she’s constantly on the verge of tears, and doesn’t want to explain why. She feels crazy and sad, but wants to hold it in and be strong.
In a pretrial hearing, Tory Lanez was taken into custody and later released on bail, violating protective orders for sharing information that related to the proceedings.
“But that’s like normal friend stuff, like, we fuss about silly stuff all the time,” Megan says at the beginning of the interview. However, as she continues, “I never put my hands on anybody, I never raised my voice too loud.” The trial takes place later this year.
