The “Menicure” movement, as Esquire dubs it, has been around for a while – think David Bowie and Kurt Cobain, who pioneered the ‘cure way before 2020.

You’ve probably noticed that men, regardless of sexual persuasion, have been painting their nails lately. While the go-to color still seems to be a more gender neutral black, many of them are starting to opt for more bright colors.

The news is travelling wide and fast, the nail polish brand Essie is launching a line of quick-dry polishes targeted to all genders. Not only that, but some nails salons – including New York City-based Sundays Studioare now promoting “Menicure Mondays.”

For men who are “quasi-gothy”, somewhat quirky but cool, nail polish isn’t a really big jump when it comes to maintaining a certain image. But can any guy pull off the nail polish look? Well, if someone even like Ansel Elgort can show up to the Golden Globes wearing a velvet tuxedo and pulling off white nail polsih, we think the trend is pretty democratic.
