HBO Max’s ‘Peacemaker’ is based off a famous Marvel character

“I think that the actual inspiration for Peacemaker was the sh*tty 1970s Captain America TV shows that I loved when I was a child.”

HBO Max has unveiled a new poster for its upcoming original series, Peacemaker. The first spin-off show following The Suicide Squad, James Gunn’s irreverent DC feature debut directed during his brief “time-out” from Guardians of the GalaxyPeacemaker centers on the anti-villain, Christopher Smith (played by wrestler-turned-movie-star, John Cena). As the showrunner, Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker, in addition to directing five of them while he was wrapping up work on The Suicide Squad.

At the moment, details on Peacemaker remain extremely scarce. The show is expected to delve deeper into the origins of Cena’s character, whom Gunn describes as a “douchey version of Captain America.” Peacemaker as a character has a gloomy past — his father committed suicide and the show navigates his journey as he learns to cope with this trauma, making rational and irrational decisions to, as he likes to say, “achieve peace at any cost.”

Gunn spoke with Den of Geek about the Captain America-inspired anti-hero saying, “I think that the actual inspiration for Peacemaker was the sh*tty 1970s Captain America TV shows that I loved when I was a child,” he elaborates, “And I think Peacemaker exemplifies a lot of things about society that are going on politically, and what people’s beliefs are about America and the world. So being able to tell those stories that are slightly more socially conscious in their essence, but also outlandish, he lends itself to that.” He adds, “”Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag.”

An important thing to note is that the poster does give us a good look at Peacemaker‘s tone. The Suicide Squad was vibrant and joyfully anarchic (James Gunn’s very distinct style), which was communicated very clearly in its vibrant and splashy posters and trailers. Peacemaker, however, is slightly more subtle than the film, and is displayed clearly through the poster’s contrasted subtle color palette and the retro aesthetic of previous clips.

Production took place between January and July 2021, and now Peacemaker is scheduled to launch on HBO Max in January 2022.

In other DCEU news, Zoë Kravitz said that filming The Batmanfelt like an indie movie. And speaking of Captain America, Chris Evans was in a Marvel movie way before the MCU.
