Between rappers curating and making artwork, and actors acting as curators, the lines of the art and entertainment world are becoming ever so thin. In an interesting twist of events, the famed actor Robert Pattinson (the new Batman), is set to curate an auction at none other than Sotheby’s in New York. However, this is not a unique happening, as many other pop culture figures have already participated in curating artworks for specific auctions at Sotheby’s.

Who is Robert Pattinson?

The English actor first rose to fame as Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga (2008-2012), a character that later gained a major cult following. He was also in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), The Lighthouse (2019), and very recently, The Batman(2022) as the title character.

What’s he doing with Sotheby’s?

Pattison has selected 6 artworks that will be part of an auction at Sotheby’s this month. The pieces will also be on view from September 23 till September 29 in New York, and the auction will take place on September 30.

Some of the artworks that the actor selected are an untitled drawing by Julie Mehretu from 2005, an untitled painting by Wilem de Kooning from 1964, Rotation #9 made by Richard Serra in 2011, as well as Portrait, a 2009 sculpture by Thomas Houseago, and Genieve Figgis’s 2015 painting Kissing by the Window. Pattison shared that when selecting the pieces, he was looking for ones that felt like they had their own language and could communicate with the viewers in a way that felt instinctive.

However, none of these works are valued at a level where they are expected to break new records, so it won’t be the kind of auction where artworks sell for insane amounts. For instance, the de Kooning’s high estimate is $2.5 million, which is more than $65 million less than his standard.

Sotheby’s “Contemporary Curated” series has partnered with many figures in pop culture previously, such as Ryan Murphy, Oprah Winfrey, Ellie Goulding, and Swizz Beatz, among others. In a way, it’s a guarantee that the auction will garner attention and sales as generally these entertainment industry icons tend to be tastemakers and trend setters.

You can learn more about Robert Pattinson’s “Contemporary Curated” auction on Sotheby’s website. The auction house has definitely been at the forefront for sneaker auctions in recent years as well.
