In pop culture, there are a handful of undeniably important roles that only a select group of actors have had the opportunity to play on-screen. Just to name a few, you have — Batman, Spider-Man, Doctor Who, and then there’s 007. The coveted role of the ultimate super spy who makes his life-threatening missions seem like just another day in the week. The announcement of a new James Bond has always been one with an eternal spotlight. This year’s 007 film, No Time to Die, is a farewell to a much-loved iteration of James Bond (played by Daniel Craig) and a gentle reminder to fans and audiences that the ushering of a new 007 agent is just around the corner.

When will it start?

007 franchise producer, Barbara Broccoli, reveals the search for a new Bond won’t begin until 2022. In an interview with Deadline, Broccoli says, “We want Daniel to have his time of celebration…next year we’ll start thinking about the future.” No Time to Die, in theaters now, will first end Daniel Craig’s 15-year and five-movie stint as the often-recast British MI6 agent most famously portrayed by Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Pierce Brosnan. MGM and Eon describe No Time to Die as the “epic conclusion” to the Craig 007 era — the films Casino RoyaleQuantum of SolaceSkyfall, and Spectre — Broccoli jokes she’s “in denial” about the English actor’s exit from the role.

Michael G. Wilson, a 007 producer since 1979’s Moonraker stated, “He’s dearly loved. Because people respect him, they respect him as an actor, and they respect him as a person. He’s an essential part of the crew, and he’s the leader of the cast, of course. But he takes his role very seriously and puts everything into the role of Bond, and he’s a producer on this film because of that. We believe he’s certainly grown into that position over the years, but he’s always been a person who takes his role extremely seriously…he’s an amazing actor, an amazing person. When you see that teary goodbye [from the set], the whole crew came out for that.”

Possible replacements

There are rumors going around that the Eternals actor, Richard Madden, is on the James Bond short list and it’s not news that many fans believe that the role should develop with the times and sidestep from the typical casting of a white actor and expand on their casting choices — with the most popular suggestion being Suicide Squad’s Idris Elba. When asked about his thoughts on the new casting for the role, Daniel Craig simply replied, “Not my problem.”

If you’re in the mood to watch new releases in the theaters, take a look at what’s coming out in October.
