Rock, Stock or Flip? May 12, 2021 sneaker releases

New Balance celebrates “Grey Day.”

May 12, 2021

Did you manage to score any of last week’s crazy sneaker collaboration releases? If not, don’t worry. A whole new week is upon us and more fire footwear than we can rush to put on is dropping. As of late, adidas has made it a whole lot easier to purchase their releases than Nike, so you may want to factor that in if you’re going for resell pairs. Anyways, let’s jump right into it.

AJKO 1 “Chicago”

A lot of people sleep on the AJKO because of the canvas upper and slightly different shape from its Air Jordan 1 counterpart. However, this sneaker is just as comfortable, if not more comfortable. I’m more than happy to see the “Chicago” colorway return for the first time on the AJKO since 2014. All “Chicago” colorways on the Air Jordan 1 command hefty price tags in the resell market and while the $300-$400 resell price of the 2014 edition AJKO 1 is relatively low, why not opt for a brand new pair for retail? You can try your luck on Nike’s SNKRS app, which will be through their rigged (oops did I type that) draw system.

Release Date: May 12, 2021 (Today)

Keith Haring x Converse Chuck 70 Hi

This one is for all the Keith Haring fans out there. The Converse Chuck 70 Hi is the perfect canvas (figuratively and literally) for the late New York artist’s work to be proudly on display. His pop art style introduces us to popular people figures embroidered along the lateral sides of both sneakers. There’s also tongue stitching that features his name and black and red splatters on the outsole. An OrthoLite insole is Converse’s latest comfort technology. These are for the art obsessed and can be purchased through draw at select retailers like Extra Butter.

Air Jordan 5 Low “Wings”

The Jordan Wings program helps provide educational opportunities to help level the playing field across the globe for underprivileged and underserved communities. To celebrate the class of 2020 (which didn’t get graduation ceremonies) and class of 2021, the Air Jordan 5 Low is taking on a graduation-inspired look. Similar to its Air Jordan 12 predecessor and very different from the Air Jordan 5 version, this “Wings” version comes with a black upper and gold detailing. “20” is embroidered into the lateral heel panel on one side and “21” on the other while “Class of 2021” is embroidered into the inside of the tongue. The traditional lace lock of the AJ5 is given a makeover to look like a tassel. Insole graphics mimic the seals on diplomas. Head over to SNKRS app to cop this celebratory pair.

Pharrell Williams x adidas Originals HU NMD “Aqua”

If you were looking for an equally vibrant pair of HU NMD sneakers to pair with Pharrell’s “Pink” iteration from March, look no further than this weekend’s “Aqua” launch. Once again channeling the spirit of humanity as one race, the bright blue variant features “ULUNTU” across the Primeknit uppers, which in the South African spoken language Xhosa means “Humanity.” This silhouette needs no further introduction as it is one of the most popular and comfortable offerings from Skateboard P and the Three Stripes. Hit up adidas’ CONFIRMED app to purchase.

adidas 4DFWD “Core Black/Core Black/Solar Red”

Last month, adidas released the 4D Fusio model for runners. Following up on that design, they’re taking the 3D-printed 4D midsole and creating another runner, driven by 17 years of research – the 4DFWD. The 4D midsole rides in between a black Primeknit upper and Solar Red rubber outsole. I’m always a fan of running footwear with loud colors so this one is a cop for personal use. adidas suggests sizing down a 1/2 size from your usual adidas shoe size for these. They’ll be dropping on the adidas app this weekend and at select retailers.

Release Date: May 15, 2021
Retail: $200
Resell pre-release: $500 – $945

adidas Ultraboost 5.0 DNA “Pride”

Pride Month starts June 1 and adidas is already rolling out a selection of footwear to celebrate. The revamped 5.0 version of the extremely popular Ultraboost silhouette gets a rainbow makeover to celebrate. The Primeknit upper is constructed from patchwork colors of red, orange, blue, yellow and green while a BOOST midsole and Continental rubber outsole provide the comfort. A special “LOVE UNITES” tag is stitched onto the heel and tongue to share the important message. These will be dropping via adidas.com.

Air Jordan 1 “Shadow 2.0”

The “Shadow” colorway of the Air Jordan 1 is an OG variation and one of the most beloved for its simple black and grey aesthetic. Never missing the chance to remix a classic, Jordan Brand is introducing a “Shadow 2.0” colorway this weekend. Instead of Medium Grey lining the heel panels, Swoosh and toe box, this version will see a lighter Smoke Grey nubuck on the overlays and black leather for the upper. Personally, I’m not a fan of this remix, it looks too much like the Air Force 1 “Snake” to me – without the amazing reflective material and faux snakeskin Swoosh. Either way, Air Jordan 1 models always flip so no harm in making some cheddar on these… if you can secure a pair or two via SNKRS app.

Release Date: May 15, 2021

Resell pre-release: $270 – $500

New Balance 57/40 “Grey/White”

New Balance is continuing to build on their strong 2020 with the celebration of a fictional holiday they started, “Grey Day.” Since the color grey plays such an important part in the DNA of the company, and the 574 silhouette as well, a new 57/40 model is taking on the color palette. Like previous sneakers before it, this one will arrive with a mixture of mesh, suede and leather across the upper. Perfect for the chunky sneakerheads and dads across the world, the $100 price point ensures you look fresh and your wallet doesn’t take a hit. New Balance’s website and retailers like Feature and END. will have these.

Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance 550 “White/Red/Navy”

On rare occasions sneaker collectors and resellers get a second shot at success. In this case, the highly coveted Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance 550 will be up for grabs once again. Released in mid-April, the chunky basketball-inspired model is a modern take on the P550 archive model. Adding in an apple-styled basketball graphic and blending in an ivory pre-distressed look on the midsole, Teddy Santis created a classic that is still holding value in the resell market a month later. Thanks to END., you have another chance to add this into your personal rotation or make a few bucks.
