Rock, Stock or Flip? This week’s sneaker releases

There’s a variety of sneakers for this week’s edition of Hot Cakes. Whether you like basketball or not, you can’t deny the fact that the sneaker game has completely changed thanks to footwear designed specifically for performance on the court but evolved into statement pieces off it. Whether it’s Nike, Jordan Brand, New Balance or adidas, this week’s drops pay homage to the hardcourt and to the streets. Let’s jump right into it.

Nike Air Raid “Black”

If you play in the paint like myself, foot support is crucial – you’re constantly getting stepped on or landing on others. The Nike Air Raid has been keeping feet secure since 1992. With a criss-crossing strap design over the laces that’s unmistakable, these classic joints arrive in black, white and grey and are a classic to add into your rotation. I’m a hard cop and rock for these. Grab them via SNKRS app and select retailers. – Matt

Retail: $140
Resell pre-release: $160 – $600

Nike Air Jordan 3 “Blue Cement”

When talking about bball sneakers, there’s nothing more iconic than the elephant print on the Air Jordan 3. Fans will remember the Chicago exclusive “Red Cement” pair with “Nike Chi” on the back from the NBA All-Star Weekend earlier this year. Now, a “Blue Cement” variation will be released to complement it. Featuring a “Game Royal” upper, this latest variation still highlights the beauty of the cement print while adding a whole new look and feel to the timeless classic. These remind of the DJ Khaled “Father of Asahd” and “Another One” AJ3s and cost way less so they’re a cop off SNKRS app and rock. – Matt

Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance P550 Basketball Oxford Pack

Teddy Santis’ ALD label continues their partnership with New Balance with another banger. Originally introduced in 1989, the sneakers have been given a modern day makeover with green, navy, red and silver variations. The full grain overlays and mesh underlays offer a familiar canvas for old school ballers and crackled “N” logo and custom ALD tongue add some flair to the otherwise muted footwear. These are a must for the colder months. They’ll be available through aimeleondore.com via draw. – Matt

Release Date: October 9, 2020
Retail: $130
Resell pre-release: $500 – $700

adidas YEEZY QNTM “Teal Blue”

Kanye’s basketball-inspired sneakers are returning in a “Teal Blue” iteration. One of the most expensive sneakers on the market at retail, these aren’t my favorite. Shades of grey cover the upper alongside flowing stripes in darker shades of grey along with the teal blue. Black runs diagonally down from the entry point to the heel and a translucent outsole completes the look. These are a pass for me but they do come in sizes for the entire family if that’s a selling point for you. Head over to adidas.com/yeezy and yeezysupply.com to purchase. – Matt

Release Date: October 10, 2020
Retail: $250 (adults), $180 (kids), $160 (infants)
Resell pre-release: $350 – $610

Nike LeBron 18 “James Gang”

LeBron James’ Nike LeBron 18 is launching in new colorways potentially on the day the Lakers win the NBA Finals. The pair comes in three colorways: black, white, and the exciting multi-color. This “James Gang” iteration of the 35-year-old’s 18th signature sneaker with an added swoosh comes in a silhouette that delivers Nike Basketball’s latest innovations. Max Air units, tweaked knit uppers, and a Zoom Air cushioning come together to provide the ultimate shoe. The tongues feature visible Airbags, and the molded heel splits the model. Though there may be a special edition of the LeBron 18 that may be released before this “James Gang” edition, this remains one for rocking. Grab it via nike.com and select retailers. – Sahar

ASICS GEL-Lyte III OG

As a runner, I’ve been sporting ASICS for years for their high performance running shoes. This shoe, released yesterday, marks the 30th anniversary of the ASICS GEL-Lyte III. It’s packed with purple undertones and colorful laces. They have a bit of a retro vibe, perfect to get you through quarantine and beyond. – Natasha
