Many people opt out of sulfur-infused skincare because of the rotten egg smell associated with sulfur. Yes, it smells but it’s also really great for acne-prone skin. Below, we break down all your questions and concerns.
What is sulfur?
A natural element essential for all living cells, sulfur is common in rocks and plant growth. It is yellow in color and has that really strong and distinct smell we talked about. Throughout history, it has been used for medical purposes and is great for acne treatments, spot treatments and soaps.
If you have mild to severe acne (blackheads, legions, whiteheads), sulfur products might be your next go-to for their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
What are the benefits of sulfur?
- By reducing oil on the skin, sulfur skin care products dry out blemishes so they can be sloughed away.
- The antibacterial properties allow skin to be free of fungi and other pollutants.
- Helps to soften and exfoliate dead skin and acne.
- Promotes exfoliation and removes impurities — aka clogged pores.
Are there any dangers to sulfur-packed products?
Because sulfur is so drying, it can irritate sensitive skin. So with all new products that you try, go with caution and patch test first.
How often to use sulfur products
Again, because it is so drying, it’s recommended to use it once a day, usually at bedtime. Experts recommend avoiding layering sulfur with other topicals as over-exfoliation is never a good thing. Especially if layer products also contain salicylic acid and retinoids. The last thing we want is a greater degree of inflamed skin.
And if a topical cream sounds too extreme, you can also consume sulfur through your diet or supplement. Always consult your doctor or dermatologist before making changes to your routine.
