Are see-through sneakers back?

After an extremely strong showing in March with their collaborative Spring/Summer 2021 apparel collection and Nike SB Dunk Low quartet release, Supreme and Nike return for another drop.

This time the footwear being offered builds on the Air Max Plus collection from Fall/Winter 2020 with another member from the Air Max family – the Air Max 96. The AM96 is a cult classic that’s beloved for its use of the visible Air Max 95 bubbles and for incorporating numerous breathable panels on quarter panels.

To reimagine this iconic pair of sneakers, Supreme has opted for a transparent quarter panel which allows you to see the wearer’s socks while on-foot and the red Supreme branded insole when they aren’t being worn. The toe box also features a transparent embossed Nike logo. In addition to that obvious detail, a leather upper and pebbled leather heel overlay add a premium feel to these. Supreme also doesn’t skimp on the detailing. 3M reflective binding will pop when light hits it while a mesh tongue and collar lining insures breathability. Embroidered logos along the side of the tongue and lateral heel plus a reflective logo on the heel make all three colorways super loud.

Nike has always allowed collaborators to have a field day with their Air Max lineup (Skepta x Air Max Tailwind 5, DQM x Air Max 90 “Bacon”, Kim Jones x Air Max 95 and more) and I’m personally glad that they found a way to spice up the underrated AM96 model. Transparent overlays had a moment in 2006 with the CLOT x Air Max 1 “Kiss of Death” and the Nike Air Force 1 “Invisible Woman” sneakers and they say that fashion usually repeats every 10-20 years so I’m all for it. You just better have your sock game in order before rocking these neck breakers out this summer.

Supreme will offer this collaboration alongside Nike in camo, black and silver. Fans can also expect matching Lightweight Crew Socks in red and black. The aforementioned Supreme x Nike Air Max 96 collection will release at Supreme’s website and in-store in America and Europe on May 6. Supreme’s Japanese outposts will have the release on May 8.
