Things to remember when taking care of your Tattoos

There’s no better feeling than having a fully healed tattoo. The freedom from itching, soreness, or slight burning pain almost matches the satisfaction of knowing that you have a tattoo that will age properly as time passes by. Tattoo care is not always fun, but it is necessary. Here are a few tips to ensure that your ink stays looking sharp. The last thing you want is an ink blob five years from now.

  1. Don’t touch it. This is an obvious one but seriously, don’t touch your tattoo during the aftercare phase. That means no scratching it or picking at the dead skin. Your new tattoo is technically a wound and this is the time your body needs to heal it. Not to mention this is the time for the fresh ink to settle into your skin.
  2. Moisturize! A rule of thumb for wounds is if it’s a wet wound, dry it out and if it’s a dry wound, keep it wet. Aquaphor is a classic go-to for tattoo healing. This ointment creates a protective barrier around your tattoo that seals in moisture and speeds up the healing process.
  3. Wash it with a gentle soap. Skin, especially when wounded, can be extremely sensitive. Nothing irritates the skin more than fragrances and sulfates. Wash your new tattoo with a gentle body wash like the Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash, a body wash that is pH balanced and leaves your skin feeling hydrated.

Again, tattoo aftercare isn’t the most exciting part of getting a tattoo but it’s a solid investment of time. Considering you just spent your coin on that tattoo, isn’t it worthwhile to make sure it sticks around and looks fresh well into your old age?
