Universal and the streaming service Peacock have reportedly paid $400 million to acquire the rights to make a new trilogy based on the 1973 film, The Exorcist. This new trilogy is set to release October 2023.

The original film went on to win two Oscars, one for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and Best Sound Mixing, making it one of the only horror films in cinema history to win such awards. It is regarded as one of the scariest films of all-time, having provoked fainting, vomiting, and heart attacks when watched.

The new films will see Ellen Burstyn reprise her Oscar-nominated role of Regan MacNeil’s mother, Chris MacNeil, alongside Hamilton’s Leslie Odom Jr. as a father seeking her help when his daughter is possessed. Linda Blair, who played Regan MacNeil, has not yet been included in any discussion revolving around the new trilogy.

This new film series will be directed by David Gordon Green, the director responsible for the new Halloween trilogy series starring Jamie Lee Curtis (reprising her role as Laurie Strode). Rather than giving this film series a reboot or remake treatment, the new films are being described as “a compelling continuation” of the 1973 original which made over $440 million at the box office. The Exorcist is a classic film that is impossibly tricky to make. Caution is granted, although David Gordon Green has succeeded so far with his Halloween trilogy that follows up the 1978 original.

While Linda Blair stated that she hasn’t been involved in any of the conversations for the new trilogy, it’s possible that she could be somehow involved in the follow-up films. With the release date being two years away, it’s hard to know for sure what the two films (following the first installment) will have in store for us. However, even if she isn’t, her performance as Regan will always be admired and referred to by movie lovers going forward.

In an official press release by Universal Pictures, they announced that the first of the new Exorcist trilogy will receive a wide theatrical release on October 13, 2023. This is the only specific release date at the moment and there are no release dates announced yet for the following two sequels. The film is set to be released in theaters, although no distribution platform plan has been announced for its sequels.

If you’re looking for more scary movies to watch in the meantime, here’s a list of ten movies to kick off spooky season.
