The reviews about The Simpsons might be a mixed bag, but there’s no denying that this show has made a tremendous mark on television history and pop culture.
In July 2007, right before the premiere of its 19th season, the long-standing cartoon came out with its first movie, The Simpsons Movie. While some may have anticipated a flop and further exhausting their comedic style, the movie did surprisingly well; earning nearly $30.8 million in the box office on its opening day in the U.S., making it the 25th-highest, and fifth-highest non-sequel opening day revenue of all-time. It doubled opening day revenue during its opening weekend.
When can we expect the sequel?
Al Jean, the executive producer and showrunner for The Simpsons, says the movie’s sequel is currently still in development. While speaking with NME, Jean noted that The Simpsons Movie 2 could still happen, saying, “we have an idea.” Jean spoke more about his time working on the first film and the television show simultaneously, stating that “it nearly killed the animators.”
However, it seems like the primary discussion at the moment revolves mostly around whether another film would work better in theaters, or on a streaming service. Jean didn’t mention any details about what the potential sequel may entail, though there seems to be a clear idea being developed by the writers.
“We’re cursed by high ratings. We’re still on the air as a TV show and that takes up a lot of time. I worked on the [first] movie simultaneous to the show, and it nearly killed the animators. But we have an idea, it’s just that we’re waiting to see what the environment is. Do we want to do it as a streamer? In theatres? Animation has been the slowest to come back to theatres. But now that [ages] five and up are getting vaccinated [in America], the business might resume. We’re in a wait-and-see mode. But there’s definitely the germ of something there.”
The issue with streaming
Again, the first film did very well when it premiered in theaters, but the same might not stand true for the sequel. While we have seen a lot of success in the theaters for many films in the past few months, COVID-19 poses one huge problem that plagues us all—uncertainty.
With all of The Simpsons seasons now streaming on Disney+, it would make a lot of sense for The Simpsons Movie 2 to be exclusive to the Disney streaming platform, though Jean has made it clear that he doesn’t want a streaming-only release for the film.
“We were really talking about it a lot before the pandemic. And now I think just as a caution, I want to see how movies and, specifically, animated movies come back, because I wouldn’t want to do it just as a streaming experience,” Jean said previously.
“We really want it to be a theatrical movie because that was the point of the first one, it was a thing you couldn’t get anywhere else. I’m going to movies, I’m vaccinated. I’m really rooting for the movie industry, but I want to see what, personally, the landscape is. And then they also have so many great movies, I think they have five [Avatar] movies, five Star Wars movies in waiting … so they have a lot to roll out and we’re going to go see Black Widow this weekend. I’m going to support the theater, even though I have Disney+.”
