ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, filed an application for a trademark in May for a service called “TikTok Music.” According to the filing, the trademark may be used for a mobile app that would let users buy, play, download, and share music.
TikTok is already a platform that makes it easier to find new music, and it frequently results in songs becoming more well-known after being featured in trends and viral videos. In the past year, a total of 175 songs that were trending on the platform made it onto the Billboard 100 chart. Additionally, according to a recent analysis from a music investor, songs that trend on TikTok end up having increased YouTube views and Spotify streams.
Even though TikTok contributes to increasing the popularity of certain songs, it doesn’t function as a music streaming service and the platform doesn’t have its own. Users usually revert to Spotify or Apple Music to listen to the songs that go viral on TikTok.
While Spotify’s algorithm is one of the most advanced when it comes to music streaming and suggesting music to users based on trends and what the algorithm suspects they may like, TikTok could be a big competitor if they create their own music streaming platform. As we all know, TikTok’s algorithm is unmatched when it comes to social media platforms and understanding user behavior.
ByteDance already runs a music streaming service called Resso in three countries (India, Indonesia, and Brazil), and it seems that they are planning on bringing this service to several more markets, potentially through TikTok. Resso is described as “a new music service for the next generation of music enthusiasts and a music streaming app that lets users express themselves and connect with others through tracks they love and the ones they will soon discover.”
Resso currently offers a TikTok-like user experience where users can scroll up and down to skip between the music. Similar to what the TikTok Music trademark states, it also offers the chance to comment on songs and albums as well as alter the playlist covers of users.
This news of a potential new music streaming service from TikTok comes on the heels of the company launching its own music marketing and distribution platform, SoundOn, to assist more musicians in getting their music heard. The platform enables musicians to directly upload their songs to TikTok, Resso, as well as major international streaming services including Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, and Pandora. TikTok would be providing a well-rounded service for both listeners and artists in the U.S. with the launch of its music streaming service in addition to SoundOn.
TikTok also recently partnered with Sirius XM to launch a radio channel. One of TikTok’s most famous success cases is the KFC spokesman himself, Jack Harlow.
