There’s more to him than meets the eye.

You probably know Tom Hardy as Bane from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (let’s save the “who’s the best Batman” discourse for another day), the Sonyverse Venom, or if you’re a real OG, as Max in Mad Max: Fury Road. But what if we told you that he has recently achieved something objectively more impressive than all 3 roles combined? It’s true. In September, Hardy secretly entered a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament — and took home gold.

Hardy, 45, is a blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, one belt grade higher than the beginner white belt (in the adult belt rankings). In late August, Hardy won the REORG Open in both the gi (the traditional uniform of Brazilian jiu-jitsu) and non-gi tournaments — competing in the 36-year-old and above division, 85.5kg (188.5lbs) in no-gi, and 82.3kg (181.45lbs) in gi. His involvement with REORG goes beyond his participation in the tournaments as he works with the REORG charity. The UK-based charity’s mission is to assist veterans when they come back home from tour and are struggling with PTSD and depression.

He then entered the 2022 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open Championship, a competition held by Ultimate Martial Arts Championships at Oakgrove school in Milton Keynes, England. A spokesperson recalled Hardy being a “really nice guy” and had added that he was a “real pleasure” to host at their tournament. “Everyone recognized him but he was very humble and was happy to take time out for people to take photographs with him,” the spokesperson said. “It was a real pleasure to have him compete at our event.”

Hardy’s opponent, veteran Danny Appleby, spoke with local UK news and said that he was surprised to see the actor come out during the semi-finals. “I was shell-shocked,” Appleby said. “[Hardy] said, ‘Just forget it’s me and do what you would normally do.'” What was really unexpected to him was how Hardy was “a really strong guy…you wouldn’t think it with him being a celebrity.”

Recently, Tom Hardy’s name was thrown around for being the new 007.
