Union LA is not playing when it comes to dropping one fire collection after another. Just a week after we had a second chance to cop the Union x Nike Dunk Low “Passport Pack,” Chris Gibbs and company are coming for our wallets again with a Union x Air Jordan 2 “Future Is Now” collection.

History of the AJ2

The Air Jordan 2 first debuted in 1986/1987 and was co-designed by Bruce Kilgore and Peter Moore. You’ve owned sneakers designed by either of these geniuses if you have ever owned the Nike Air Force 1 (Kilgore) or Air Jordan 1 (Moore). If you don’t know, the Air Jordan 2 is the most luxurious sneaker ever produced in the Air Jordan lineup. Made in Italy, the sneaker featured a premium leather upper and reptile skin detailing.

An interesting rumor about the original AJ2 is that the original mold was either stolen or destroyed. When the first retro release happened in 1994/1995, Nike had to take an OG pair and dissect it in order to get the shape and mold — similar to the way Virgil Abloh created the cracks in the outsole of the Off-White x Air Jordan 2 which released last year, but way less hi tech in ’94. Nike had to repeat the process again in 2004 for the retro. With rumors floating around that we will get a retro this year to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the silhouette, I wonder if they had to redo a dissection again.

The Union collaboration

For this collaboration, Union was tasked with a brief to think about what a future utopia would look like. Here’s what Union wrote about the capsule on their website:

“For the ‘Future Is Now’ capsule we wanted to juxtapose what some futuristic gear might look like after it has been worn and patina’d. So often you see peoples vision of the future and is all crisp and sterile. We thought it might be fun to wear it in a little bit and make it organic…”

In order to achieve the effect of patina, grey, blue, yellow and blush orange were chosen as the main colors. Both models of the Air Jordan 2 feature premium suede and also beige laces and a label on the sockliner, something that has never been done. Additional footwear includes a Jordan sandal.

Apparel in the collection is very much in line with what Union offers — everyday staples. Tops include a jacket, hoodie, sweatshirt and assortment of long- and short-sleeve tees. Bottoms include pants, sweats and shorts that all match their upper counterparts. Accessories like socks and caps round out the collection.

Union took the time to highlight some local Los Angeles organizations and individuals in their editorial for the collection. These creative forces believe in the phrase “The Future Is Now” and are helping to create their vision of a futuristic utopia today.

How to cop

Union will release the entire collection on April 15 at 11 A.M. EST through It is unclear if we will get a SNKRS app release at this time so good luck to everyone!

Although still too early to tell, how do you think these match up against the Union x Air Jordan 4?
