Leather outerwear, shoes, gloves or bags have been sought out for years but have not been the most sustainable thing for our planet. To combat these harmful practices, vegetarian and vegan leather alternatives (or faux leather) were made. Curious in making the switch? Below we highlight everything you need to know about vegan leather.

What is vegan leather?

Vegan leather mimics the texture and feel of real leather but is made of plant-based or synthetic materials, whereas real leather is derived from animal skins. It’s typically made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyurethane (PU) giving them the crinkle of real leather. However, the two materials have recently been known to derail the environment as well, leading manufactures and brands to choose more plant-based materials like pineapple, mushroom, apples and recycled plastic. Vegan leather is slightly more delicate than real leather.

Where can you buy vegan leather?

The great thing is, as more and more consumers start to care about sustainable purchasing, luxury and high-end street brands nearly all have vegan pieces to choose from. Some of our favorite are from Noah, Nordstrom, and adidas.
