When did long socks become “in” again?

You rockin’ the trend?

Remember how people wore long socks in the 70s and 80s with their shorts? In the early 2000s, the sock that ended just above your heel was the only acceptable look. Now, what was once considered a symbol of the style-challenged is suddenly fashionable again. White tube socks have never really been so, well… cool. It seems that recently, every style icon started wearing what used to be thought of as an embarrassing accessory, as a statement, and it seems to be working.

Yes—you heard right: it’s totally in style to wear high socks with shorts. GQ’s fashion editor, Garret Munce, noticed this trend last summer in Brooklyn—many unlikely men’s fashion trends have incubated this way.

To get the look right, fashion experts recommend going with athletic, thick tube socks rather than thin ones. They also encourage pulling them up to their full length. The market is definitely accommodating to this trend, you can get a three-pack for under $20 virtually anywhere.

But, careful how you wear these: if you’re wearing them with shorts too short, it can look like you’ve teleported from the 70s, and not in a cool way. Reversely, if you’re wearing them with really long shorts, the look can appear too sloppy.

Let’s put it that way, you have to have an attitude to pull this trend off — but that doesn’t mean it can’t be easily done by anyone.
